Was kaum jemand weiß, ist, dass dieses Lied eine lange
Vorgeschichte hat: Der englische Kirchenmann Philip
Doddrige schrieb im 18. Jahrhundert einen Hymnus
nieder, betitelt „Oh happy day, that fixed my choice“. Er
nutzte dafür eine ältere Melodie, die 1704 von dem
deutschen Theologen Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen
komponiert worden war.
Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bekam der Hymnus eine
Neufassung der Melodie durch Edward F. Rimbault, der
einen Chorus hinzufügte. Dieser Hymnus wurde
üblicherweise während Tauf- und Konfirmationszeremonien in England und Amerika gesungen.
Im 20. Jahrhundert wurde das Lied aus dem 3/4 in den
4/4 Rhythmus überführt und von Edwin Hawkins 1967
neu arrangiert, wobei nur der Refrain von Rimbault blieb,
alle anderen Verse entfielen.
Bereits zwei Jahre später die Aufnahme der Edwin
Hawkins Singers ein internationaler Hit, der es in den
USA auf Platz 4 und in Großbritannien auf Platz 2 der
Pop Charts schaffte.
Zwar hatte zuvor Aretha Franklin Gospelsongs in die Pop
Charts gebracht, aber „Oh Happy Day“ war das erste
Kirchenlied, das dieses schaffte.
Das Lied wurde von zahlreichen Musikern interpretiert
und in viele Filme übernommen, der bekannteste ist wohl
Sister Act, in dem das Solo von dem damals
15-jährigen Ryan Toby gesungen wird.
