Guglhupf, Gugelhupf? Mit oder ohne „e“?
Ja woher kommt denn der fröhliche Name?
Funde bronzener Guglhupfformen beweisen, dass schon die
Römer diese gewellte Form mit einem „Schlot“ in der Mitte
verwendeten. Das Wort Gugel kommt daher aus dem
lateinischen „cuculla“ und bedeutet Kapuze. Neben der
Verwendung verschiedener Teigmassen wie Hefeteig (original),
gerührt, marmoriert, aus Biskuitmasse mit Rosinen verfeinert
oder ohne, haben sich auch eine Anzahl von Namen
eingebürgert. So heißt er im Elsass Kugelhopf, bei den Sachsen
ist es der Aschkuchen (von den Escheholzformen herrührend),
die Österreicher haben natürlich ihren eigenen Kaiser-Guglhupf
und in Süddeutschland wird er auch als Napfkuchen bezeichnet.
Aber eines hat der weltweit bekannte Guglhupf gemeinsam:
Er wird aus der runden und gewellten Form mit einem Schlot in
der Mitte gelupft!

Findings of bronze ring cake pans prove that the Romans
already utilized the corrugated mold with the “smokestack” in
the middle. The word “gugel” stems from the Latin word
“cuculla” and means hood. Besides using different types of
dough such as yeast (original), plain, marble, sponge cake with
or without raisons, different names have become common use.
Thus in the Alsace the ring cake is called “Kugelhopf”, in Saxony
it is the “Aschkuchen” (evolved from its ash wood form) in
southern Germany it is known as the “Napfkuchen” and the
Austrians naturally have their own “Kaiser-Guglhupf”.
