highlight “MADEIRA: FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE REST OF THE WORLD” The Arte Sacra Museum of Funchal opened on 14 June, the exhibition, “Madeira: from the Atlantic to the rest of the World” within the 500 Years Jubilee of the Funchal’s Diocese. The exhibition assembles a collection of 56 pieces of goldsmithery, sculpture and painting, a selection of the most precious art works belonging to the Diocese of Funchal, organised chronologically between the 15th and 20th centuries, and coming from numerous chapels and churches of Madeira and Porto Santo. Many of them displayed for the first time in this exhibition. In this specific collection stands-out sculpture, with notable art works such as: “Cristo Crucificado” (Crucifixion of Jesus) of a Portuguese mid-15th century workshop and originally from the Convent of São Francisco, in Funchal, today in Funchal’s Cathedral; “a Virgem com o Menino” (Madonna and Child) from an Antwerp workshop of the early 16th century of the Mother-Church of Ribeira Brava; “Senhor da Paciência” of a mid-17th century Portuguese workshop from the Monastery of St. Anthony, in Funchal; “Nossa Senhora da Vida”, dated of the early 17th century, coming from the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vida, in Fajã do Mar - Madalena do Mar; “Santa Rita de Cassia” from Funchal’s Cathedral of a workshop, in Lisbon, of the mid-18th century, or “Nossa Senhora com o Menino” (Madonna and Child) by the renowned Madeiran sculptor Francisco Franco, from São Gonçalo’s Church, in Funchal. In painting, a special reference to the “Holy Family” from the Flemish school and datable of the early 16th century, originally from the Chapel of Espírito Santo, in Porto Santo; a set of four paintings ascribed to master Abrantes, dated of the early/ second half of the 16th century, originally from the Church of São Brás, in Calheta, or the “Imaculada Conceição, Santa Ana and São Joaquim com os Doadores” by Martim Conrado, from 1646. In goldsmithery, the silver gilt Manueline Processional Cross dated of the early 16th century from the Mother-Church of Calheta; the silver gilt, mid-15th century, Holy Chalice from the Church of Ponta do Pargo, or the mid-16th century “Cruz Relicário” (cross- reliquary) of Funchal’s Archdiocese and Cathedral. During three days the city will be “invaded” by artists from around the world. The line-up is fearless, standing out the regional premières of “Memória de Peixe”, the collective performers CHERYL, The Correspondents, “Marina Gasolina” and “Cucurucho”, who join the amazing guitar player “Filho da Mãe”, Trio “O Anjo” and the local artists “Triângulo” and music / dance “Guilherme Órfão”. The festival opens on July 10th with a performance/intervention by “CHERYL” in Barreirinha Bar Café at 6.30pm. On July 11th and 12th, the event goes to one of the most enchanting sites of Funchal, the Madeira Story Centre Terrace. The doors open at 4.30pm and the first performances take-off at 6.00pm. At 10.30pm takes off the performance by a greatly recognized Portuguese musician and composer, Rão Kyao with his last album “Coisas que a Gente Sente” (Things that we feel). Portugal and Cape Verde will be in the limelight on the 18th of July with the musicians Dany Silva and, another renowned name from traditional Portuguese music, Júlio Pereira. Closing this year’s edition, on July 19th and as from 9.00pm., the Luso-Brazilian band “Couple Coffee” and the “MedioAtlântico”, a brand new local group. Noteworthy is that, in addition to these three days of concerts, are also held on July 15 and 16, two other events: a workshop - “An approach to Madeiran chordophones” with Roberto Moritz and Rodolfo Cró, and a conference - “The Cavaquinho” by Júlio Pereira.
