INGLÊS Text I GETTING THE FACTS RIGHT ABOUT VITAMINS A lot of misinformation has been published about vitamins — and it’s vital to your health to get the facts right. Here, two nutrition experts separate the facts from the myths. MYTH: Vitamins give you energy. FACT: Not by themselves, because they contain no calories. But vitamins do help convert the calories in food into energy. MYTH: Vitamin E improves your sex life. FACT: There isn’t any evidence to support this. MYTH: New vitamins, such as laetrile and choline, continue to be discovered. FACT: There are only 13 vitamins recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration — vitamins A, C, D, E, K, B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cobalamin), biotin, folic acid and pantothenic acid. Substances such as laetrile and choline aren’t recognized as vitamins because they don’t meet the two criteria for vitamins — no dietary requirement for them has been shown and no deficiency disease occurs if they’re absent from the diet. MYTH: The more vitamin D you take, the stronger your bones will be. FACT: No so. Vitamin D is necessary for strong bones, but bone deformities and multiple fractures are common among people who absorb too much of the vitamin. MYTH: Health food stores sell “perfect” foods that contain every vitamin. FACT: No such “perfect” food exists. MYTH: Vitamin C can help lower your blood cholesterol level. FACT: No. There’s no clinical evidence of this. MYTH: If you get too much of a vitamin, your body will excrete the excess. FACT: Many vitamins are water-soluble and they’re excreted from the body. But vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble and they are stored in the body. (The Entertainment Magazine) De acordo com o texto I, as vitaminas...
