Wednesday 27th May• Week 5•Term 2• 2015 St Clare of Assisi Primary School Conder, ACT BE THE LIGHT Dear Parents and Carers, WALKATHON Well done to everyone for a great day last Friday! The weather was a bit cool and windy, but everyone had a great afternoon. Thank you to everyone for walking with students and helping with check points, first aid, encouragement, food and refreshments etc. The day was a success due to the wonderful assistance we received from so many parents and grandparents. So far we have raised over $20 000! We ask that all money and cards please be sent into school by Friday. DISCO Looking forward to seeing many parents and students at the disco on Friday night! Parents are reminded that the disco is a parent coordinated and supervised event. Some staff might pop in for dance, but they will not be present to supervise students. Special thanks to Denise Driessen and Trudie Heinrich for all their hard work. It should be a great community event. SEMESTER 1 REPORTS This year Semester 1 Reports will be sent home on the last day of term, July 3. This will provide more time for effective teaching, learning and assessment to take place. Parents will have an opportunity to meet with their child’s class teacher early next term to discuss Reports if they wish. LEAVING ST CLARE OF ASSISI If you anticipate that your child will leave St Clare of Assisi at the end of this year, could you please notify the Front Office or complete the slip attached and return it to school. We need to begin planning for staffing and class configurations for 2016. Thank you to those who have let us know already, this is very much appreciated. Please make sure that your emergency contacts are up-to-date so that we can contact you quickly if your child becomes ill or is injured at school. If your child requires medication at school you are required to complete a “Request to Dispense Medication” form which is available at the Front Office. A reminder that students are not to self-administer medication. Medication should not be kept in children’s bags but kept in the Front Office area and Karen, Shari, Annette or Jo will administer. Canteen Roster Morning Afternoon Smurfs Match Report The Smurfs played the Sparkles on Saturday and both teams performed really well. Smurfs defence was fantastic as they continued to put in to play the skills they have been focusing on at training. Our ball skills have improved so much and the girls are turning and passing with a lot more accuracy. We had two players unavailable this week and we must thank Kayla Blue an Aluel Aleer for filling in for us. The Smurfs played a great game of netball on a beautiful sunny morning and hopefully will have another great game this weekend against Rebels. Swifts Match Report On one of the best Saturday mornings weather wise this season, the SCA Swifts put all of their skills on display and had one of their most amazing games so far. The seamless team work allowed the girls to effortlessly overcome the HF Jaffas 34-4. Having returned from injury, Allyssa Megalli put in a stellar performance at Goal Attack and was named player of the week. A special thank you to Taylah, who stepped up as coach this week and had the girls playing beautifully in both attack and defence. A huge thank you to everyone that helped in the canteen last Friday for Walkathon. Thursday Friday 29th May K. Blenkin T. Atkinson Monday 1st June K. Robinson K. Filipovic K. Wednesday 27th May• Week 5•Term 2• 2015 Counsellor Corner Promoting Resilience in Young People Compiled by Lisa Armstrong (Student and Family Counsellor) The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second-best time is now. – African Proverb This week’s entry is about building resilience in our kids. Resilience is a person’s ability to cope with the stressors in life. We may not always be able to prevent things from going wrong for our children, but we can certainly help them build strengths so that they are more able to successfully face challenges and setbacks. Family (nurturing a sense of value and self-worth) • Maintain family rules and be consistent despite your own external pressures. • Keep consistent bed times. • Follow family rituals such as “tuck in time” at bedtime – for older kids use this time to allow your child to talk to you about their day. Have one on one time once a week with each of your kids. Celebrate birthdays. Keep these rituals up particularly during tumultuous times; they give a sense of normalcy and stability. • Teach your child to serve others, make sure your kids have age appropriate chores to carry out around the house regularly, don’t accommodate every need straight away and when you get, be patient enough to let them fulfil their own need. • Create opportunities for kids to help younger children. • Identify emotions: when reading books; reflect on the characters emotions and how they handle them. • Let your children wait from time to time, without entertainment. • Give children some perspective; help them to organise their toys or books and prepare to pass them onto those less fortunate. Build wider support networks • Encourage children to develop a diverse friendship group that extends beyond those made within the school gates. Belonging to a club, a sporting group or interest group will help to extend their networks. • Provide opportunities for your kids to mix with the most positive members of their friendship groups – encourage them to invite a friend to the house on the weekend or for a sleep over. Most importantly! Nourish your own resilience and well-being so that you can show your kids how to live life. Strategies that don’t work: • Over-protecting your child. • Feeling sorry for your child all the time. • Accepting work that is below what they are capable of – from school or home.
