Prayer Groups Spanish Charismatic Group Wednesdays 7 pm Spanish Prayer Group Thursdays 6:30 pm Portuguese Prayer Group Thursdays 7 pm Pastor’s Note Dear Parishioners, Sacramental Information Baptism Last week we started reflecting on the meaning of the Eucharist that we celebrate in our Catholic churches around the world. Our Catechism of the Catholic Church beautifully explains that “The Eucharist is a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Father, a blessing by which the Church expresses her gratitude to God for all his benefits, for all that he has accomplished through creation, redemption, and sanctification. Eucharist means first of all thanksgiving."(n.1360) It also teaches us that Eucharist is far more than simply a “memorial,” remembering what happened once-upon-a time. It gathers us all together around the Eucharistic table for a very special meal. A meal, especially one with family and friends, and particularly on occasion of celebration, is an opportunity to deepen closeness, bonding, communion and even union. It is an intimate occasion. Please, think by contrast of all the meals taken alone or with strangers or when there is tension and resentment, and how the meal then is lacking in harmony. Jesus gave us the Eucharist at the Last Supper. But in this case, we not only eat with the host of the meal, we also eat and drink the consecrated host and wine and thereby eat the giver of the gift, becoming one with each other as we become one in Jesus Christ. In the liturgical celebration of these events we recall the Passover’s ritual meal that was celebrated as a “memorial” of the great escape from slavery in Egypt and the entry of God’s people into a new friendship, a new covenant with God. Jesus took the Passover Meal and fulfilled its deepest meaning. He transformed it into the memorial of his own saving death and resurrection. The heart of Jesus’ saving work is made present for us here and now: in the Eucharist, Jesus himself is personally present as our crucified and risen Savior (n. 1340). There we powerfully Contact the Parish office to arrange for baptismal preparation. Baptisms are celebrated monthly except during Lent. Spanish Prep Class: 1st Mon at 7 pm; Baptism: 3rd Sat at 10 am English Prep Class: 2nd Mon at 7 pm; Baptism: 4th Sat at 10 am Weddings Arrangements need to be made at least six months in advance. Call the Parish office. Rosary The Rosary is recited daily after the 8 am Mass and before the 5:30 pm Mass on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Hispanic Community has a Rosary Hour every Monday at 6 pm in the Rectory Chapel. proclaim that it is Jesus himself who tells us to “Do this in remembrance of me” (1 Cor. 11:24). A “sacrificial” understanding of the Eucharist is the heart of our Catholic teaching on the Mass. We call it sacrifice because “it re-presents (makes present) the sacrifice of the cross, because it is its memorial and because it applies its fruit” (n. 1366). By taking part in the Eucharist, we participate in Christ’s saving sacrifice, his death and resurrection. In conclusion, we can say that the Eucharist is much more than a Communion Service at which the Scriptures are read and Holy Communion is given. Due to the great shortage of priests, in some Catholic churches a deacon or lay minister leads such a service when there is no priest to preside at a celebration of the Eucharist. Such services are of great value when a priest cannot be present, but they are not the Mass and are ultimately no substitute for the Mass itself. (To be continued). Fr. Take a look at - http://stclareparishfestival.com/ Scripture Readings for THIS Sunday First Reading: Acts 9:26-31 Psalm: 22 Second Reading: 1 John 3:18-24 Gospel Reading: John 15:1-8 “Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.” John’s words come to us on this day when the Gospel passage presents us with the great image of the vine and the branches. Jesus uses the image as a warning to those who have begun to distance themselves from the way of the Lord. One of the ways this happens is when we love God and others “in word or speech” instead of “in deed and truth.” What does it mean for us to “remain in Christ?” In an extension of the metaphor, the Lord gives us an example. If we remain in him, we will bear much fruit. As the branches, we draw strength from Christ who is the vine. This strength enables us to bear fruit—to do the work of true discipleship. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
