SPRUTBASS
Während der letzten fünf Jahre hat Sprutbass, oder auch Eivind Henjum wie der
Norweger mit bürgerlichem Namen heißt, mit seinem analogen Synthie-basierten
Elektro Funk in der internationalen Musikszene Aufmerksamkeit erregt. Sein Debüt,
die sehr gut kritisierte 7” Ulykke, releaste Sprutbass 2008 bei Dødpop und veröffentlichte seither bei dem Finnischen Label Harmönia und dem Britischen Label
Ninja Tune. Kritiker haben seine Musik als „the best synth work since the Beverly
Hills Cop soundtrack” und “Friday night at EDMX’s place“ beschrieben.
Dass Henjum seinen guten Ruf zu Recht genießt, bewies er als er 2012 beim
Roskilde Festival einen neuen Besucherrekord aufstellte und ein Mosh Pit an der
Apollo Bühne startete. Die letzten Jahre ist Sprutbass stetig in Amerika getourt und
hat die Dancefloors in Paris, New York, Barcelona und Berlin gefüllt. Wenn er nicht
auf Tour ist, arbeitet das in Berlin lebende Talent ausgiebig im Studio an seinem
Debütalbum, das 2014 bei Dødpop erscheinen wird.
In der Zwischenzeit ist am 11.12.2013 eine EP mit Remixes des Tracks SchengenFunk von Pyrolator (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft bzw. D.A.F.), Sandra Kolstad, Melkeveien, Full Pupp’s Øyvind Morken, Sex Judas (Ost & Kjex) und anderen
erschienen.

Eivind Henjum represents for the Norwegian Skweeegian fraternity with his first solo
Sprutbass EP. His low-riding, arctic gangsta title tune proves he‘s got the funk. ‚Hell
Goya‘ cracks out the purple 8-bit R&B vibes and ‚Schengen-Funk‘ sounds like Friday
night at EDMX‘s place, while ‚Norsk Dans‘ does it like a viking Justin Timberlake.

Here at XLR8R, we‘ve had our ears blown away by the recent skweee sounds coming from Scandinavia, evidenced by our feature on the genre in issue 127. A new
compilation from one of the genre‘s flagship labels features this monster, a squeaky,
anthemic take on dubstep rhythms featuring frenetic synth modulations and acidy
flourishes. Watch out for future Sprutbass releases, as his diversity of influences and
textures is quickly making him one of the stars of the Oslo scene.

Norway‘s Dødpop label has been at the forefront of the funky, synth-driven music
called skweee since its inception in 2008. Now, three years later, the imprint gathers
together its handful of 7“ releases to be reissued on the forthcoming compilation
Dødpop: A‘s & B‘s. Oslo producer Sprutbass contributes „Ulykke“— from a split 45
with fellow Norwegian Beatbully—to that record, which we also have to share with
you today. The playful track has an almost comically, not to mention cosmically, sinister vibe, almost like you can picture the tunesmith grinning ear to ear in a not-somaniacal way while he drops the crunchy synth fragments and skittering beat work
